GREENSBORO, N.C. - University of Delaware softball swept a doubleheader from North Carolina A&T, 11-0 in five innings and 6-5, on Saturday, March 16, 2024. Emily Winburn recorded the win and game on and the save in game two, while Morgan Hess hit two home runs in game one and Kristen Luzon hit a home run in game two. Winburn's save tied her for the career program record with eight.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS, GAME ONE

Hess went 3-for-3 with two home runs, five RBIs, and three runs scored.
Winburn pitched four innings, allowed one hit, struck out six, and earned the win.
Katie Scheivert went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Maddie Fife with 2-for-2 with an RBI.
Chloe Blantz went 2-for-4 with a double, RBI, and a run scored.
Julia Boyet went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Julz Garber went 1-for-2 with a double, a walk. and a run scored.
Sydney Shaffer went 1-for-2.
Kendall Shank pitched a perfect fifth inning.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS, GAME TWO

Hess earned the win by pitching five innings and allowing three hits and five strikeouts.
Winburn earned the save by pitching the final two innings and striking out four.
Luzon hit a pinch hit two-run home run.
Costaro went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Katie Scheivert went 2-for-3 with an RBI triple and a walk.

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME ONE

Winburn struck out two and stranded two runners in a hitless first inning.
In the top of the second, Hess hit a two-run home run to put Delaware on top and begin the scoring.
Winstruck struck out two more in a scoreless second.
Delaware added four runs in the third inning. Scheivert hit a two-run single with the bases loaded, then Fife singled home Hess and Scheivert scored during a rundown to make it 6-0.
Another strikeout helped Winburn through a perfect third inning.
Delaware added four more in the fourth to go up 10-0. Blantz singled home Garber, then Hess hit a two-out, three-run home run.
Winburn finished her day with a strikeout to end a perfect fourth.
Ryleigh Thomas walked and Lille Scheivert singled in the top of the fifth. Luzon drove home Thomas with a pinch-hit single for Delaware's 11th run.
Shank pitched a 1-2-3 fifth inning to cap off the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME ONE

Game two began as a pitcher's duel, with both teams being held hitless into the fourth inning.
Hess struck out the side in the second inning and ended the third inning with a strikeout.
N.C. A&T got their first hit and run in the fourth inning.
Delaware responded with a run in the fifth. Costaro singled to left to begin the inning. Scheivert tied the game with a two-out RBI triple to score Anaya Troy, who had pinch ran.
N.C. A&T took the lead back on a two-out two-run triple.
Delaware once again responded and scored three in the sixth to take the lead. Giattino walked and Garber and Blantz both singled to load the bases with no outs. Costaro singled home two to tie the game, then Boyet gave Delaware the lead on a sacrifice fly.
Winburn relieved Hess in the sixth inning, and struck out two in a scoreless sixth.
Luzon hit a pinch-hit two-run home run to give Delaware insurance runs.
N.C. A&T attempted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, but Winburn stranded the tying run on second base with a strikeout to end it.

GAME NOTES

Winburn earned her eighth career save, tying Chenxi Jiao and Kristi O'Connell for most in program history.
Hess hit her 30th and 31st career home runs. It was also her fourth career multi-home run game.
Hess is the first Delaware player to hit two home runs in a game since Hanna Garber on Feb. 20, 2022.
Katie Scheivert went a combined 4-for-6 with three RBIs, including her second career triple. She has driven in a run in four straight games, the longest streak of her career, and has six RBIs over the last four games.
Luzon's home run during game two was the second of her career. She also homered against Norfolk State on March 4, 2023.
Fife recorded her 100th career hit during game one.
Lillie Scheivert picked up her first career hit during game one.
