NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware softball defeated Delaware State, 8-0, to clinch the Route 1 Rivalry and earn their fifth straight win over the Hornets.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS

Kendall Shank pitched four shutout innings and allowed just one hit to earn the win.
Sydney Shaffer went 2-for-2 with a double, triple, walk, and two runs scored.
Katie Scheivert went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Veronica Diomede went 1-for-2 with three RBIs.
Lillie Scheivert went 1-for-1 with a walk, double, and RBI.
Gianna Costaro had a run scored, RBI, and walk.
Morgan Hess scored a run and drove in a run.
Julz Garber and Maddie Fife both walked and scored a run. Garber also stole a base while Fife had an RBI.
Graceyn Frost pitched a scoreless fifth inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Shank worked a perfect first inning. Shaffer doubled to put her and Scheivert in scoring position with one out in the first. Scheivert scored on a wild pitch as Costaro walked to score the game's first run. Shaffer scored on an error, then Fife and Lillie Scheivert drew based-loaded walks. Diomede cleared the bases with a single to put Delaware up 6-0.
A line drive double play turned by Diomede helped Shank through a scoreless second inning.
Garber walked and stole second base to lead off the second inning. Katie Scheivert singled her home to put Delaware up 7-0.
Shank pitched a hitless third and fourth inning, with a 5-4-3 double play helping her through her final inning of work.
Shaffer tripled in the fourth inning and came around to score on a Costaro groundout.
Frost pitched a scoreless fifth inning to seal the win.

GAME NOTES

Delaware has won four straight games and five straight vs Delaware State.
Shank started the first game of her career and won her third career game. Her four scoreless innings were also the most innings she has pitched in a game without allowing a run in her career.
Shaffer hit her second career triple and third career game with at least two extra base hits.
Diomede had a career-high three RBIs.
Katie Scheivert has recorded multiple hits in back-to-back games for the second time this season, also done during a doubleheader against North Carolina A&T on March 16.
Lillie Scheivert had her first career extra base hit and RBI.
Hess drove in her 97th run of her career.
