NEWARK, Del. – It was a tightly contested game for the entirety, but No. 14 Penn pulled ahead in the second half and came out with the 9-7 victory over the University of Delaware in women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Delaware Stadium.
Junior Casey Lyons (Georgetown, Ontario, Canada/O'Donel) led the way for the Blue Hens (2-1) with two goals and one assist while classmate Shannon Hawley (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) added two scores of her own in addition to two groundballs.
Just 30 seconds into the second half, Lyons tied the game at 4-4 before Tory Bensen converted on three straight free position shots to give Penn the 7-4 advantage.
Hawley and junior McKenzie Rafferty (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown East) registered their own free position goals to bring the game within one at 8-7, but Bensen notched her sixth goal of the day with 4:35 remaining to put Penn ahead, 9-7, for the final score.
Junior Kara Dattellas (at left; Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) and freshman Becky Gohsler (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) each controlled two draws while Dattellas added two groundballs and two caused turnovers.
Alex ZaugraLucy Ferguson earned the win for the Quakers (1-0) and also registered five saves. Bensen led Penn with six goals while Lely DeSimone tallied two. Megan Kelly picked up three groundballs while also producing three caused turnovers.
“We knew we were going to face a good challenge and that's what we want. We were excited and ready to compete and that showed in the opening minutes. They made a run in the second half, we gave up off-ball fouls and free position shots that they capitalized on which was a big difference-maker for them. We played for an entire 60 minutes against a great team and unfortunately they came out on top.”
Junior Casey Lyons
“Our defense really had a great game and Zaugy [Alex Zaugra] played amazing. They got the momentum on us in the second half and when we needed the draw, we couldn't get it or when we needed the goal, we didn't get it.”
Junior Abby Wheble
(at right)
“We definitely knew it was going to be a tough defensive game and obviously a good attack that we needed to shut down. We came into the game confident and we do know we can compete with top teams. We'll keep bringing that no matter who our opponent is. It's tough to come up short but we're not going to let it crush our confidence.”
