NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women's lacrosse team snapped a five-game losing streak to Rutgers University Saturday afternoon as the #rv Blue Hens defeated the Scarlet Knights, 12-7, at Delaware Stadium.
Junior McKenzie Rafferty (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown East) guided UD with four goals, all of which were Delaware's final four of the game. The attacker also posted a groundball and caused turnover for the Blue Hens (4-1).
Classmates Shannon Hawley (at left; Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) and Casey Lyons (below right; Georgetown, Ontario, Canada/Berkshire) contributed two goals and one groundball apiece while Lyons added an assist and Hawley controlled one draw.
The Blue Hens took a 5-0 lead to start the game and was up, 5-1, at the half. Rutgers came out of the break inspired and tallied two unanswered goals to come within 5-3. UD proceeded to take the 7-3 advantage before the two teams swapped
goals over the next 10 minutes of play.
Rafferty's final two goals of the day gave Delaware the 12-7 win.
Kim Kolodny posted three goals, an assist and one draw control for Rutgers (1-3). Amanda Turturro added two goals, an assist and caused turnover while Lauren Sbrilli and Jenny Vlahos posted a game-high four draw controls each.
[On Senior Day]: “The team is always passionate about coming out and getting a 'W' at home for the seniors. We have a great group this year and I think we played inspired as we have been every game.”
[On Alex Zaugra]: “I thought Alex was huge in the home stretch. Rutgers got some momentum and Alex made some big saves to keep us in the game when they had a few 8-meter looks. I am really happy with her performance and I thought her composure on the clears was a positive for us. When the team was a little frantic, she took control of the game.”
“We played together today. We had a lot of things to go out and play inspired for. It was senior day and we haven't beaten Rutgers in my four years here. We also play every game inspired for Abby [Supplee, the team's B+ Hero]. That is what holds us together and makes us come up with a win. The key today was staying settled. When things got hectic, we pulled together and worked as a team.”
Junior McKenzie Rafferty
“Our energy definitely increased throughout the entire game. Building momentum was the key and we were able to adjust without having Caitlin [McCartney] out there.”
Junior Erin Wein
“As a [defensive] unit, we work well and always back each other up. If a teammate gets in a bad situation, we have their back.”
