Hawley Spearheads 12-10 Upset of #11 Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. – The University of Delaware women's lacrosse team snapped a 17-game losing streak to Princeton University Saturday afternoon as the Hens defeated the 11th-ranked Tigers, 12-10, for the first time since 1989.
For the third consecutive game, Shannon Hawley (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) guided #rv Delaware (8-4) in scoring, this time with a career-best five goals. The junior also added a caused turnover in the win.
Princeton (7-2) posted the first goal of the afternoon, but the Blue Hens eventually took a 4-2 advantage before holding a 6-5 lead at halftime. The Tigers roared back in the second half and were up, 10-9, with less than five minutes remaining in the contest.
The Hens then took matters into their own hands as junior McKenzie Rafferty (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown East) tied things at 10-10 with 4:51 on the clock.
It looked as though the match would go into overtime before Hawley gave Delaware an 11-10 lead with 33 seconds left. The Blue Hens didn't stop there however as Rafferty tallied a last second score from classmate Lizzie Duffey (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Lenape) to finish off the 12-10 upset.
Rafferty finished the day with her eighth career hat trick on three goals.
Caitlin McCartney(Doylestown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) registered a game-best six draw controls while junior Ali Karwoski (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) tied a career-high four groundballs for the second straight contest. Alex Zaugra (Medford Lakes, N.J./Shawnee) registered seven saves for her 21st career victory.Anna Doherty led the way for Princeton with three goals, three groundballs and four caused turnovers. Ellie DeGarmo was credited with the loss with six saves and 12 goals allowed.
