NEWARK, Del. – Colonial Athletic Association newcomer Elon University pushed the momentum in the second half, but the University of Delaware women's lacrosse team held on for an 8-6 victory over the Phoenix Sunday afternoon at Delaware Stadium.
The Blue Hens (9-4, 2-0 CAA) led, 8-2, with just under 25 minutes remaining in the contest, but Elon (7-5, 0-2 CAA) capitalized off missed UD shots and scored four unanswered goals to put the score at 8-6 with 8:09 left on the clock.
The Delaware defense held strong, however, allowing the Phoenix no shot attempts and two turnovers in the final eight-plus minutes.
Offensively, junior Casey Lyons (Georgetown, Ontario/Berkshire) led the Hens with three goals, all tallied within the first 15 minutes of the game. Sophomore Kara Dattellas (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) added two goals and one groundball in the win.
Caitlin McCartney Alex ZaugraNicole Sinacori led Elon with two goals and one assist while Stephanie Asher posted two goals and one groundball. Goalie Rachel Ramirez recorded 14 saves and four groundballs in the loss.
“Only having a single competition this week, we were able to focus on getting better ourselves in the beginning, which has been a point of emphasis. I like how the team's been progressing. I think everyone's contributing to our improvement on a daily basis.
Today, Elon came in and competed. They gave us a great second half and built some momentum and capitalized where we fell short in terms of crease defense and putting the ball in the back of the net. We did what we needed to do in the second half to get the win.”
“The CAA is obviously a dogfight; you never know who's going to show up or who's going to have a bad game on any given day. It will always be a tough game. We didn't know what to expect with Elon. We knew they were going to give us a tough fight, but we came out on top. It wasn't the prettiest, but a win's a win.”
