NEWARK, Del. – The woes continued for the University of Delaware women's lacrosse team as Drexel defeated the Hens, 6-4, at Delaware Stadium Friday evening.
The Blue Hens, who have lost five straight by two or fewer goals, fall to 8-6 and 0-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association while the Dragons improve to 9-4 overall and 2-1 in league play.
Drexel jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before Delaware rattled off four straight to tie things at 4-4 with 20 minutes remaining in the contest. The Dragon defense held tough however while Nadia Pelham-Lacey registered two goals in the final 16 minutes for Drexel's first win over the Hens since 2013.
Senior Shannon Hawley (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) guided UD with two goals to up her season total to 21.
Sophomore Becky Gohsler (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and senior Kara Dattellas (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) added goals of their own.
Senior Abby Wheble (Avondale, Pa./Avon Grove) led the Hens with two draw controls and two groundballs.
Sophomore Taylor Carpentier (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) logged seven saves, a caused turnover and a groundball for Delaware.
Kateri Linville“They definitely dictated the tempo to start and they did a nice job on the draw. It took us two or three draws to finally settle in and answer. Going into the second half, we had a good strategy to compete and we had an awesome response from the team. The CAA is a competitive conference and we have a ton of quality teams that are all gunning for the chance to compete for a championship. We're coming off of a tough stretch of heartbreaking losses, where we've been competing, but not finishing.”
