Women's Lacrosse Drops Home Tilt to Saint Joseph's

NEWARK, Del. - The Delaware women's lacrosse team (2-6) fell to Saint Joseph's (4-4), 19-8, Saturday afternoon.
On a warm, breezy sunny day in Delaware Stadium, the Hawks took an early two-goal lead at the beginning of the game.
Danika Swech answered with a free position goal on the far right hash. Saint Joseph's tallied another goal to stretch its lead, 3-1.
With seven minutes left in the first quarter, Delaney McDaniel received a feed from Riley Gillin behind the cage and scored after rolling the crease. Halen Saroney tied the game, 3-3, on a give-and-go from Gillin.
Saint Joseph's scored two more goals at the end of the first quarter, giving them a 5-2 lead entering the second quarter.
Kendra Schweizer scored the first goal of the second quarter after cutting through the left side of the eight-meter, forcing a feed into the back of the net from Gillin.
The Hawks went on to score four straight goals, stretching their lead, 9-4. Sydni Rosa was able to score on a free position shot from the far left hash, sneaking past Jorden Concordia's non-stick side mid. SJU scored once more to take a 10-5 advantage into the break.
Saint Joseph's pulled away in the third quarter, scoring eight straight goals, leaving the Blue Hens scoreless. The Hawks had an 18-5 lead entering the final period.
Lizzie Yurchak opened up a scoring streak for Delaware at the beginning of the fourth quarter. She received a pass from Swech and fired a rocket of a shot from the right elbow of the eight.
Schweizer netted her second goal of the day on a free position attempt from the far left hash for the Blue Hen's second straight goal. Meghan Johnson scored her first goal of the season from the middle hash on a free position, closing out Delaware's scoring streak in the fourth quarter.
The Hawks put one more goal on the board with three minutes remaining in the game to come away with the 19-8 victory.
Gillin led the Blue Hen's offense with three points on three assists, while Schweizer had netted two goals. In the midfield, Danielle Livornese had four draw controls and two caused turnovers.
Starting goalie Mercy McCarthy made six saves in the cage, holding a .375 save percentage, while Sophia Foohey made two stops. SJU's Concordia earned the win, making four stops with a .400 save percentage.
The Hawks outshot the Blue Hens 37-19, holding the Blue Hens to just two shots in the third quarter. Saint Joseph's also had the advantage in draw controls, 22-9, while Delaware had an 11-10 edge in ground balls.
Seniors Maddie Maio, Schweizer, Mollie McCormack, Amelia Kienzle, Harley Pilling, Malaina Dunn, McCarthy, Swech, Johnson and Nikki Feaster were honored before the start of the game for their time at Delaware with the women's lacrosse team.
The Blue Hens look ahead to another home game, hosting UMBC, Wednesday, March 23 at 4 p.m. in Delaware Stadium.
