Men's Soccer Defeats NJIT in First-Ever Matchup

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware men's soccer team took down the Highlanders 2-1 in an exciting competition Tuesday evening.
This victory improved the Blue Hens' overall record to 7-2-4 on the season, recording the most wins the program has had since 2016.
COACHES QUOTE
- "This was as close to a complete performance as we've put together this season. Our work rate on both sides of the ball was sensational. We held a very talented team to minimal chances and created some excellent opportunities in front of the goal," head coach Tommy McMenemy said. "Our ball movement improved as the game progressed, and I thought it was another good glimpse at the potential of this group. Our sport performance team is doing an amazing job at keeping the bodies healthy and fresh, and we're looking forward to a tough game Saturday."
- "Tonight was a complete team performance from start to finish, and we look to keep this form for the upcoming CAA game this weekend," junior midfielder Einar Hardarson said.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Sam Donnellan and Richard Monath each recorded a goal.
- Donnellan and Jan Schroeder both tallied assists.
- Adam Vik made his first home appearance this season and recorded a save.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hens and Highlanders both came out strong but the game remained scoreless until the 41st minute.
- Schroeder found the foot of Donnellan in the middle who's shot deflected off the Highlanders' goalie, Samuel Reisgys, and into the back of the net.
- NJIT tied the game 1-1 just a minute after the start of the second half with a goal from Alvaro Heredia.
- The defense from both sides put on a show, denying either team the opportunity to score until Delaware notched one more with just under 12 minutes left on the clock.
- Donnellan found Monath just off to the right side of the goal. Monath buried the shot to the middle of the net and gave the Hens a 2-1 lead.
GAME NOTES
- Delaware outshot NJIT 18-6 with 10 shots on goal.

Delaware returns to action on Saturday evening with a home matchup against Hofstra.
