NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware men's soccer team defeated the Pride for the first time since 2014 on Saturday night.
This victory marks the first top 25 win for the Blue Hens since the 2019 squad took down West Virginia 1-0.
COACHES QUOTE
- "This was a program performance from top to bottom. Our technical staff continue to do a great job preparing the game plan, while our performance staff ensure we're healthy and fresh to compete. The boys competed at a high level tonight against a top, top team, and we couldn't be prouder of them," head coach Tommy McMenemy said. "We weathered the moments in the game where they were on top, and fashioned some quality chances in the moments we controlled. All of our program goals remain in reach, and we'll continue to fight to achieve them."
- "This was the best team performance we have ever had. Every single person on and off the pitch knew their jobs and put 100% effort into it. Even at the start of the game when they were announcing the names I just felt electric, the atmosphere was amazing. I knew it was going to be a great game for us after that," junior midfielder Orri Thorhallsson said.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Richard Monath and T.J. Hastings each recorded a goal.
- Sam Donnellan and Jan Schroeder each tallied an assist.
- Adam Vik recorded four saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Delaware and Hofstra both came out firing but entered the second half scoreless after an intense first 45.
- The Blue Hens scored the first goal of the night in the 46th minute after Monath sent the ball past Hofstra's goalie, Wessel Speel, to the bottom right corner off a pass from Donnellan.
- The Pride answered just nine minutes later with a goal from Pierce Infuso.
- The game was tied 1-1 until the 64th minute when Schroeder crossed the ball to Hastings who was set up on the back post. Hastings fought off members of the Pride's defense and found the back of the net with a header to give the Hens a 2-1 lead.
- The Blue Hens fought until the final second and denied Hofstra any chance to score the equalizer.
GAME NOTES
- The two highest ranked opponents the Delaware men's soccer program has ever defeated have been #7 (2013) and #18 (2011, 2023).
