NEWARK, Del. - Delaware baseball (4-7) broke out in the third inning with 11 runs for a final score of 13-2 to avoid being swept by Rider (7-4) on Sunday.
The Broncs scored first in the top of the second off of a sacrifice fly and sacrifice bunt, after loading up the bases. Those runs would be Rider's only two in the game, as Delaware starter Chris Grome started to find his rhythm.
Grome pitched four innings with four strikeouts and no walks, earning both his first strikeout and first win of the season.
"It was great, we bounced back today," Grome said. "We were able to attack on defense and offense."
In the bottom of the second with two outs, Tyler Leach hit an RBI single to right field to cut the deficit to one.
The next inning, the Hens had the bases loaded and three consecutive walks from Jake Dunion, Aidan Kane, and Leach gave them a 4-2 lead. RBI hits from Andrew Amato, Joey Loynd, and Dunion, along with a two-run home run by Bryce Greenly rounded out the scoring for 11 runs on six hits. Delaware sent 16 batters to the plate, and all runs were scored with two outs.
Leach recorded his third RBI of the game after being hit by a pitch in the fifth with the bases loaded for the final score of 13-2.
Tyler Strechay recorded the save after throwing three scoreless innings with four strikeouts, while not allowing a hit. The game ended after seven innings due to the mercy rule.
Three Hens had multi-hit efforts, while seven different Delaware players recorded a hit. Dan Covino became the ninth player in program history to record four walks in a game, tying a single-game record.
Delaware is back in action on Tuesday for a mid-week game against George Washington. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
