WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Delaware baseball (29-27, 17-13 CAA) clinched a spot in the CAA Tournament for the first time since 2018 after splitting a doubleheader with Monmouth (16-30, 6-22), losing the first game 10-5 and winning the second game 3-0.
"I'm proud of these guys, it has not been an easy season and they never are," head coach Greg Mamula said. "Obviously, the goal is to win the tournament, and you can't do it without getting there."
Game 1: Monmouth 10, Delaware 5
The Hens got off to a quick start in the first game as JJ Freeman drove in Eric Ludman with a double, but the rally was halted there as he was thrown out at third.
Monmouth took a brief lead against Joey Silan, scoring twice in the second.
Joey Loynd got two RBIs in the fourth to stretch his season total to 79 on a double, making it 3-2.
The Hawks once again took the lead back, but Aidan Kane chopped a single up the middle to make it 4-4.
Monmouth scored six runs in the late innings, and despite a Jake Dunion RBI double in the ninth, the visitors fell 10-5.
With a Hofstra loss against Elon, Delaware clinched before playing its second game.
Game 2: Delaware 3, Monmouth 0
In game two, the pitching was dominant. Nate Rolka and Anthony Gubitosi combined for a one-hit shutout, the first shutout of the season for the Hens.
Rolka fired a career-best six innings, striking out a career-high six, while Gubitosi pitched three perfect innings, striking out three and earning his second career save.
"Going into today, I was just hoping to be competitive out there," Rolka said. "I've been struggling to find the zone, and when I have found it, I have gotten hit around a bit, but I felt that I had a good mentality today. I feel best on the mound when I'm relaxed, and everything fell into place."
It was a pitcher's duel until the fifth inning. Andrew Amato broke the ice with an RBI double, and Dunion drove him in with a single.
An RBI groundout by Josearmando Diaz added a much-needed insurance run for the Hens.
Gubitosi pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, sealing the first shutout of the season.
Dunion went a combined 4-for-8 in the doubleheader, while Amato had three hits and Gabe Dermott went 2-for-3 in the second game.
Delaware will await the results of Saturday's games to determine seeding and who it will play in Charleston.
