NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware softball team took both games of a doubleheader against Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday afternoon at Delaware Softball Stadium. The Blue Hens won the first game, 4-2, and had a come-from-behind 3-1 victory to complete the sweep. With both wins, UD moves to 15-7 on the season, while the Mount sits at 6-12.
Game One: Delaware 4, Mount St. Mary's 2
The Blue & Gold put four runs on the board early in the first inning, which is all it would need to secure the win.
Brittney Mendoza had three of the Blue Hens' eight hits, including a two-run double for her 100th career RBI, while Morgan Olynyk drove in two more runs on a double to right field. Halle Kisamore also had two hits and safely reached base three times. Hanna Garber and Julz Garber each reached base twice with a hit and a walk.
Emily Winburn fired her third-consecutive complete game, allowing just two runs while striking out six.
In the bottom of the first, Hanna Garber and Kisamore each walked to put two runners on for Mendoza. Mendoza doubled to left field, scoring both runners. Kailey Christian reached on a throwing error and stole second, putting her in position to score along with Mendoza on Olynyk's double to give UD an early 4-0 lead.
Winburn was dominant in the circle, only allowing four singles through the first four innings, only needing five pitches in the third inning and four more in the fourth.
The Mount scored two runs in the fifth inning, but Winburn shut their offense down for the final two innings to record her seventh win of the season.
Game Two: Delaware 3, Mount St. Mary's 1
Emily Blum drove in two runs and Delaware pitching held the Mount scoreless over the final six innings to take game two.
Megan Stauffer started in the circle and gave up one run on three hits in two innings. Graceyn Frost came on in relief and earned her sixth win of the season as she kept Mount St. Mary's scoreless with just two hits and five strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work. Olynyk and Blum each had two hits to lead the UD offense.
Mount St. Mary's jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a run-scoring double.
The Blue Hens' bats were quiet until the fourth inning when they put three runs on the board. Christian doubled and Olynyk singled, putting two runners on for Blum. Blum delivered with UD's third two-RBI double of the day. She came around to score on Julz Garber's RBI ground out to extend the lead to 3-1.
Frost stranded two runners in the fifth, and then allowed just one infield single over the final two innings, shutting the door to complete the sweep.
The Blue Hens will hit the road for a doubleheader at Villanova on Saturday, starting at 12 p.m. It will serve as Delaware's final nonconference weekend series.
